The Side Street Inn

It's pretty hard to describe the Side Street Inn to anyone who might not have been exposed to this type of "local" eatery in Hawaii. For starters, there really is no way to classify the "cuisine" you find here, hence my leaving the type of restaurant blank. For guys who used to come here after work for a beer and some good local grinds before the restaurant evolved into a local hot spot, this was just a neighborhood diner--offering nothing in the way of ambience or great service or beautiful decor and presentation. And it remains that way today. The reason it has become a destination restaurant is the food, a mish-mash of everything you might expect to see in Hawaii. You have seafood, of course, and your meat dishes, and good locally grown produce, but all are prepared in a way that reflects all of the ethnic influences that make up Hawaii--Hawaiian, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Filipino, and a bit of "haole" (white guy) thrown in. Simply put, the food is outstanding and reasonably priced. Even a jaded diner like myself, having grown up in Hawaii and thinking that I pretty much had sampled most of the good stuff available there, walked away surprised after a visit back to the state recently. The Side Street Inn does not take reservations, so call to see what hours they might recommend your coming in, or be prepared to stand in line. No worries--it will be worth the wait.
