You have to look for this restaurant on Gartenstrasse 9 in an area that's not in the tourist hotspots. Take the S-Bahn to Nordbahnhof and walk two minutes to find this hidden gem on the corner of Gartenstrasse and Schroderstrasse. The light and fresh interior (by local firm BFS Design) is in stark contrast with the neigborhood. The food is a contemporary version of the south German kitchen. There's not much to choose from but it's all prepared with fresh ingredients from local farms. The apple cream soup with fresh garlic (€ 7.50) was well balanced and the Wiener schnitzel (€ 18.50) is rumored to be one of the best in the city. Vegetarians are taken seriously in this place. It's not a Michelin star restaurant, but the combination of attentive waitresses and honest food in a pleasant decor makes it an attractive affair. Oh, did I mention that the bill was just over € 40,- for a three course meal including drinks?
